How to shoot drone photos for Real Estate, Residential and Commercial Property

This blog post provides an overview guide to using drones for real estate, residential, and commercial property photography. Atlas Aviation shares some of its top tips for obtaining high-quality drone imagery, drawing on the team's combined 1500 hours of experience in manned and unmanned aviation.

Effective battery management is key to drone photography and execution. To maximize efficiency, start with top-down shots, followed by oblique shots and pole shots. This is a common format used by drone operators, and one that Atlas Aviation recommends.

Here are the three steps to follow:

STEP 1 – Shooting the Top-Down Shots

Position the drone directly above the property and angle the camera straight down. Ensure the streets are lined up straight and that all key items you want in the picture are in the frame. Take at least three shots from different altitudes, starting around 30 meters and increasing to 60 meters or higher, until you have everything in the frame.

STEP 2 – Shooting the Oblique Shots

Starting from your final position on the top-down shots, fly backward away from the property until you have a nice frame that includes the property, horizon, and sky. Begin taking photos as you orbit around the property. After one continuous 360-degree orbit at that altitude, continue the process at different altitudes, starting at 120 meters (the legal limit) and bringing it down to around 30 meters.

STEP 3- Shooting the Pole Shot

As you lower the drone to come to land, position it to the side of the property, and then at a sight angle to the front for the pole shot effect. Keep in mind that low-altitude shots can be dangerous due to power lines, trees, light poles, and other hazards on the street. Walk to the front of the property or somewhere with a clear line of sight on the drone, so you can see it come down.

Atlas Aviation does not cover the twilight shot in this guide as it is a separate procedure.
