Tourism Case Study - White Ladies Priory

In the next in our series of 2023 customer blogs, Atlas Aviation showcases a previous project, White Ladies Priory. The team at Atlas Aviation has a combined 1500h in manned and unmanned aviation and can help and guide customers where required.

Background: White Ladies Priory, formerly known as the Priory of St Leonard at Brewood, was an English priory of Augustinian canonesses. It is now in ruins and located in Shropshire, specifically in the parish of Boscobel, approximately eight miles northwest of Wolverhampton, and near Junction 3 of the M54 motorway.

The priory gained notoriety after Charles II sought refuge there and at the nearby Boscobel House, during his escape from Parliamentarian forces after the Battle of Worcester in September 1651.

The Brief: Atlas was tasked with producing aerial photographs and videos at this location, as well as providing an Enhanced Site Report that included a variety of visual and video imagery, 2D analysis and calculations, plant health information, elevation data, and a 3D model with a digital surface model. This is an outstanding illustration of how aerial photography can offer a fresh perspective on historical sites and provide interactive and engaging content that can attract visitors to the site.

How we carried it out: White Ladies Priory is situated in the hills of Shropshire. Before the shoot, the team took a pleasant walk around the area to scout it out. During our preplanning, we had noticed a military airbase located 5 miles away. As White Ladies Priory lies on the final approach to the airbase, we ensured that we had contacted relevant stakeholders for proper prior permission and to set aerial height restrictions. With these measures in place, our next obstacle was the wind. As you can see in the video below, the wind was gusting up to 25kt, making it a challenging condition for the drone. To ensure the best possible results, we had to manually control the drone for this shoot, which made it even more exciting for the team. Despite the challenging conditions, we were able to capture some amazing media. Please take a look at the media below and via the link.
